However in some dogs the symptoms can be more severe or last longer — in which case your vet may recommend treatment to speed up recovery.

Treatment for False Pregnancy in Dogs

For Mild Cases

If your dog's symptoms are mild and she seems comfortable, the best approach is usually to wait it out. Keep her routine as normal as possible — regular walks, feeding times, and gentle interaction all help.

Avoid massaging or stimulating the mammary glands as this can actually increase milk production and make things worse.

If she has adopted a toy as her substitute puppy, do not take it away suddenly as this can cause significant distress. Gradually reduce her access to it over a few days instead.

For More Severe Cases

If your dog is very distressed, not eating, producing large amounts of milk, or the symptoms are lasting longer than three weeks, visit your vet. Your vet may recommend:

Mastitis — infection of the mammary glands. If the glands feel hot, hard, or painful to touch, or if the milk looks discolored, see your vet immediately

Repeated episodes — some dogs experience false pregnancy after every single heat cycle, which can be exhausting and stressful for them over time

How to Prevent False Pregnancy

The only permanent solution to prevent false pregnancy is spaying. Spaying removes the ovaries and eliminates the hormonal cycle that causes false pregnancy entirely. If your dog experiences repeated or severe false pregnancies, your vet will likely recommend spaying as the best long term solution.

If you plan to breed your dog in the future, discuss timing and options with your vet before making any decisions.

My Personal Experience

A close friend of mine went through this with her dog Ruby. Ruby had never been around a male dog but suddenly started carrying a small stuffed bear everywhere and refusing to leave her bed. Her belly looked rounder and her nipples were visibly swollen. My friend was completely convinced Ruby was somehow pregnant.
